Distinction between LPNs and RNs
You will realize that there are a good number of nurses in Canada. While some of these nurses are Registered Nurses, you will learn that others are Licensed Practical Nurses. You will definitely come to understand that there is a difference between these two. You will get to learn more about the distinction as you read on.
It is imperative to indicate that RNs will often spend more time in their education as compared to LPNs. You will learn that an RN will only be able to attain his or her degree after studying for a period of between 18 and 36 months. In fact, you will note that there are instances where they will just get a certificate or an associate degree. It is necessary that they ensure that they pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. There is no doubt that this degree will time and again be competitive. It is for this reason that a good number of employers prefer it. There is also room for one to pursue a Masters and even a doctorate in Nursing. You will learn that LPNs will only take a year to complete their studies. They will in most cases pay more attention to patient care. This degree is designed in such a way that will allow then to get into the workforce as soon as possible. They will then be able to fund their education from then on.
There is usually a difference between where LPNs and RNs work. Generally, you will find that nurses work in diverse environments. You will learn that an RN will often be more qualified than an LPN. This is why an RN can give specialist care to patients. You will note that LPNs will often be relied on to give patients their medication and reading vital signs. Largely, LPNs tend to work in long term facilities such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. RNs tend to prefer being in hospitals. When it comes to hospitals, you will note that RNs will time and again have more responsibilities than the LPNs. There is even a possibility for the RNS to be in charge of LPNs. The LPNs are free to use their experience to get a BSN.
It is evident that RNs will often have a higher income than the LPNs. This difference will in most cases be brought about by where they work and their responsibilities. They will only be licensed upon sitting for and passing a given exam. They will also be required to pass a background check before they are allowed to work. These licenses will need to be current at all times.
